I recently bought a new laptop and needed a simple solution for syncing between my office pc and the new laptop. I looked around a bit using the ol’ Google and came up with a lot of crap. Seriously, there are a ton of syncing applications out there but none compare to the two products I am about to mention.
The first one is called Dropbox. It’s a very simple product to use and it allows you to sync up to 2 gigs of data. It actually acts as a middle ground for storing files which is kind of cool but wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. With Dropbox, you install a little program that runs on your computer and you can share files with anyone else that has a Dropbox account just by entering their email address and sending them an invite to share a folder. It’s a pretty cool concept for groups working on projects and I highly recommend you check it out but seeing as how it stores the files for you and you’re limited on storage, it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something to simply sync the files on both computers without any storage. http://www.getdropbox.com
The next little app I found was the perfect fit for what I wanted. Windows Live Sync. Yes, it’s a Microsoft product, but it works like a champ. It allows me to add my two computers under my account and setup folders on each computer to sync whenever there is an active Internet connection. It also has a remote desktop application that is quite nice … not as cool as LogMeIn but it gets the job done. Live Sync works really fast and is syncing files within 2 seconds of saving the file.
Both of these applications together have been working great for me.
